My great grandmother moved to the UK from Bilbao. My Nan was born and met my Grandfather. They had my mum which led to the arrival of me and my two brothers. From an early age I was aware that part of my heritage was Spanish and I loved this. Growing up in Wales with some Spanish blood gave me a weird sense of belonging to more than just one place. Of course, if we all look back a few generations, each of us will discover this connectivity to European genealogy and beyond. Of course, we’re not encouraged to dwell on these facts these days. (Heaven forbid we see common ground with everyone else on this rock – imagine what that would mean for the elites who survive on our divisions, fears and prejudices.)
The digital world has connected us to each other more than any other time since the Garden of Eden. Though as an atheist, I would argue we are now more connected than any time in the history of our species altogether, forget Eden. Young people in particular are identifying more and more as members of a global digital community, connecting with like-minded people with incomparable upbringings. This is the magic dust that sets our species apart; the ability to communicate and connect with other members of our race who may have never envisaged someone like us. And it’s wonderful.
The digital revolution is leveling the old ways. The notion of the ‘foreigner’ is being completely turned on its head with the ever-evolving online world with no borders. For warmongers and weapons sellers, this is not good news. So much so that without an imminent war, the billionaires in the UK may well soon have to swap their yachts for smaller yachts. And they don’t want that. They want war. And whether it’s Iran, China, Syria, Venezuela, they’ll probably get their war too. But we the people have influence over this. You see, when the species opts for connection over propaganda, it marks the end of the profiteers of death. We’re not there yet, but we’re going there, or our species will fail.
As a former journalist, published author and activist, I have concluded that the UK is now running, full pelt to a nationalist agenda. And when I say ‘nationalist’ I do not mean a concept that is inclusive of Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales. No, on the contrary, the nationalist agenda is solely about the Kingdom of England – the south of England to be precise. With the BBC all-but begging far right nationals to preach on their platforms, and Rupert Murdoch continuing to churn out right wingers like Julia Hartley-Brewer (a facilitating voice befitting of the Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui), this is a very particular form of nationalism.
There are some people who really try to believe that the UK can cope without the help, work and ingeniousness of those they would call ‘foreigners’. ‘We don’t need them’ they bellow, through gritted teeth, clenched for reasons that have nothing to do with immigration. Imagine that. Brain surgeons, cleaners, nurses and teachers, athletes and tradespeople, drivers and posties – booted out over the border. And as the tumours grow untreated and the meats arrive unregulated, the teeth-gritters will still have the stubbornness to repeat the mantras of the millionaires from whom the lies originate – ‘We survived WW2 so we can survive this’. How does one even argue with such gross ignorance? It’s like engaging with a yogurt or a nettle.
But as the digital moves ever further into the physical, racism feels even more feral, more alien. The real irony is that the leaders who orchestrate the right wing narrative mercilessly, don’t even believe in the rhetoric they spew out. In fact, this makes them worse than racists. A racist has convictions, of course heinously wrong and debase. However, the billionaires who run the UK simply wear the mask of racism to control the angry people and how the angry people vote. And my goodness me, how these islands have danced to the tune of the elite for many, many years. How long do the food bank queues have to grow before we realise this was the plan all along? How much does the retirement age have to rise before we realise this whole thing has been orchestrated?
Let me pull up the curtain of the nationalist pantomime for a second. If you don’t let foreigners arrive, many members of your young people will leave, like me. You see, when you close the borders, you tell all your citizens that our country will only ever be as successful as the natives who make it. But for the digital native, this is beyond jarring. Theresa May, the most ineffective PM the UK has ever had, said that “If you believe you are a citizen of the world, you are a citizen of nowhere.” Second to the lies of the warmongers Blair and Campbell, these words are for me, some of the most disturbing uttered by our millionaire overlords. She is saying that these islands offer nationalism or nothing. And in that case, I choose nothing, and I will not be alone.
In a month’s time, my wife and I will relocate to Europe. The lives of any children we have in the future will be European. And when it comes to my new place of citizenship, I will not hesitate to destroy my UK identification if that is was it takes to remain a European. This will infuriate the nationalist and draw mockery and hatred from them. Even now their teeth will begin to clench. But when the rise of the far right in the Kingdom of England reaches terminal velocity, and the foreigners become even more the scapegoats for the faults of the billionaire elites who run these lands, maybe then they will see the sense of this decision. Saying that, we’ve seen child poverty grow to historical records and have done nothing. We’ve got into bed with fascists and done nothing. We’ve watched teachers and nurses go hungry and have done nothing. So maybe we are that sort of electorate, ethically comatose. Many other nations would have revolted decades ago. We however, wait for Murdoch’s instructions to come through his furious caricatures, his wind-up human dolls. Or we blame Corbyn. Both endeavors sign up to the elite far right masterplan, which we have welcomed with bells on.
Union is the only hope for this species. Not Brexit, not MAGA, not Extremism, Union. I for one want to raise a family within a union that looks beyond flags. The people who comment beneath this article with hateful accusations and MABA/MAGA threats were angry way before they read this, and their masters are damn well happy about their anger. However, what lots of angry nationalists refuse to contemplate is that Farage, Hopkins, Yaxley-Lennon, Brewer are simply paid to voice disgusting opinions regardless of whether they believe them or not. And why is this the case? Because their notoriety acts as an umbrella for angry people. ‘Come here, be angry with us, feel at home, vote this way.’ And when the angry people arrive at the polling booth, they do exactly what the millionaires want. And so the far right cycle continues generation after generation.
It’s beyond simple to see: Create an enemy (Immigrants/the EU/LGBT/ Muslims/Jews/Socialists/Atheists/Experts) blame this enemy for the reason there’s so little opportunity and so much poverty, use an unhinged millionaire to lead the charge against the enemy, watch the votes come in. It works every single time. But why do we fall for it? Why don’t we look at the elite millionaires and the hundreds of acres that they own and ask the dreaded question – Why should the life you have or don’t have depend solely on the vagina you’re pushed out of? Why do we continue to play the sperm lottery when only a tiny few can ever feasibly win?
One day I am certain that pacifist, progressive, humanism will be the only flags we bow to. The medieval clambering for the colours that set us apart will be viewed like internet dial-up; slow, weird-sounding and irrelevant. Until that day I will continue to stand for the citizens of nowhere, but it will not be here in the UK. I fear for the young people here, and I advise as many of them as I possible can to consider relocating to less aggressive and primal lands. Take the leap to a place that sits in union with its neighbours. Lands that look up and out with open hands and not inwardly with clenched fists and gritted teeth. English nationalism has now been ushered in through the media and manipulative social media campaigns. This has happened before. It will not end well.
The EU is flawed and infuriating. It too has the curse of the elites masquerading as representatives. But it is progress, and deep down we know it. And it’s a world away from the nationalist Kingdom of England. A kingdom that has become the wasteland for billionaires to play with the souls of the angry. Wrap it up anyway you want, Westminster laughs at the ever-present submission of the Welsh, Northern Irish and Scottish, like a tormented bully removing the wings from insects. Whilst you still have the freedom to leave the Kingdom of England and its unapologetic nationalist agenda, whilst you still have wings, fly. It will be worth it. And don’t grind your teeth, it causes headaches.
